Mymensingh Sadar upazila on the north, Bhaluka and Gaffargaon upazilas on the south, Ishwarganj, Nandail and Gaffargaon upazilas on the east, Fulbaria upazila on the west.

Trishal thana was established in 1909 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 12 union parishads, 91 mouzas, 160 villages.
